(I also have a .htaccess file to facilitate this.) These error pages are all exact copies of my home page, so whatever the user does, they will end up seeing my home page if they make a mistake. What concerns me is, will I incur any duplicate content penalty (with Google or any of the search engines) because of this, and will my rankings suffer as a result?

If a website has multiple URLs pointing to the same content – is it really bad?
If a website takes content from a partner and posts it up – is it bad?
And what penalties can, or does, Google mete out to those posting duplicate content?

I’m working on a project which loosely resembles a directory or information portal on my home town. Now there are about 20 or so suburbs and i wanted to do a detailed analysis on each of the suburbs, profile, demographics, etc.

Without a doubt much of the content will be copied verbatim from the Council Site, with appropriate attribution. What i really wish to know is:

1. Duplicate Content – Am i correct in asuming that it wont incur a Google Penalty, it just will not assist me in serps as it will be considered to be a copy, with the Council site being the MASTER copy. (which it is)

2. The page may not be indexed by Google due to duplicate content, but provision of this information assists the site visitors so as such, is benificial.

Has anyone any experience with using duplicate content, correctly attributed, and therefore any pros, cons or concerns?
