First, the story can be told by someone who is, himself, completely outside of the story, or second, he can present the story as being told by one of its characters. In the first approach, the teller (narrator) either goes into the thoughts as well as the actions, and speeches of the characters, or he simply describes the characters’ behavior while foregoing any personal interpretation or analysis of their thoughts. When the story is told by a character (the second approach), the author may assume the role of the main character and tell the story in first person or he may act as a minor character and tell the story as a first-person observer.
